FAVES & DISCOVERIES 2024 // PART I.
Das letztes Jahr ist wirklich ganz und gar nicht so gelaufen, wie ich mir das vorgestellt hatte, besonders was diesen Blog betrifft. Deswegen werde ich nun ganz langsam meine Fühler ausstrecken und wieder starten: mit meinen jährlichen popkulturellen Highlights der Literatur, Serien und Filme sowie Musik. Denn auch wenn das letzte Jahr schlimm war, ist das neue Jahr auch schon ziemlich katastrophal gestartet, weshalb ich die Gelegenheit nutzen will, nochmal in schöne, vergangene Dinge einzutauchen.
Kaum zu glauben, dass ich die Faves & Discoveries nun schon zum achten Mal schreibe – manche Dinge ändern sich trotz des ganzen Auf und Abs des letzten Jahres eben doch nie!
Kommen wir zunächst zu Büchern. Ich würde sagen, es war das Jahr der Jugendliteratur für mich, wenn man sich die folgende Liste anschaut… lest selbst!

The past year was really nothing like I thought it would be, especially when it comes to running this blog. So I’m slowly dipping my toes back into the water, with a classic: my yearly pup culture highlights in literature, films and series, as well as music. Because even though the past year was pretty bad, this year is already off to a worse start, which is why I want to take this opportunity and cling to some nice, past things to remember 2024 positively.
Also, I can’t wrap my head around the fact that I’m doing Faves & Discoveries for the eighth year now – some things apparently never change!
Let’s start with books, as usual. I would say it was the year of Young Adult fiction for me, judging by the following list… read for yourself!

BÜCHER // BOOKS
I. A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow – Laura Taylor Namey
Ich bin ehrlich, ich habe das Buch nur lesen wollen, weil es verfilmt wurde und mein Heartstopper-Liebling Kit Connor eine der Hauptrollen spielt. Und dann fand ich es einfach richtig gut, was es noch frustrierender macht, dass der Film immer noch kein Release Date hat…
Im Buch geht es um Lila, die den Sommer bei ihrer Tante in England verbringt, obwohl sie eigentlich andere Pläne hatte. Aber ihr Freund hat Schluss gemacht, ihre Abuela ist gestorben und ihre beste Freundin macht eine Weltreise anstatt mit ihr aufs College zu gehen. Zunächst findet sie England ziemlich langweilig und doof im Vergleich zu Maiami, aber dann lernt sie Orion kennen und es entwickelt sich eine kleine Liebesgeschichte.
Was soll ich sagen? Es war emotional, herzerwärmend, wunderschön geschrieben und ich hatte einfach eine gute Zeit! Jetzt fehlt nur noch der Film und dass ich endlich den zweiten Teil lese…

I’ll be honest with you, I only read this book because it has been made into a movie and my Heartstopper favourite was cast in one of the leading roles. And then I just really loved the book, which makes it even more frustrating that the film still hasn’t gotten a release date…
The book is about Lila, who spends the summer with her aunt in England, even though she definitely had other plans. But her boyfriend has dumped her, her Abuela died and her best friend has decided to leave her behind to go travelling instead of going to college with her. At first, Lila doesn’t like Englnad at all, especially compared to her beloved Miami home, but then she meets and gets to know Orion and a small love story unfolds.
What can I say? It was emotional, heartwarming, beautifully written and I simply had a great time reading it! Only thing missing for my happiness now is getting to see the film and finally read the second book…

II. I Was Born for This – Alice Oseman
Wer dachte, ich könnte kein krasserer Alice Oseman Fan werden als sowieso schon (Stichwort Heartstopper, nochmal), der/die (mich mit eingeschlossen) hat sie Rechnung ohne dieses Buch gemacht. Es war einfach so gut?! Der einzige Grund warum ich manchmal traurig bin dass ich kein Teenager mehr bin, ist dass ich gerne mit Büchern wie diesem aufgewachsen wäre.
In I Was Born For This begegnen sich Angel und Jimmy: Angel ist Megafan von der Band The Ark und Jimmy ist ihr Frontmann. Doch ihre Begegnung läuft alles andere als perfekt und alles eskaliert um sie herum. Eine richtig gute Auseinandersetzung mit Starkult, Freundschaft, Queerness, Teenage-Angst und dem Erwachsenwerden.
Mehr braucht es nicht zu sagen. Ich hab’s sehr geliebt.

If you thought I couldn’t possibly become a bigger Alice Oseman fan than I already am (Heartstopper, again!), you definitely didn’t see this book coming. And neither did I, to be fair. It was simply so good?! The only reason why I’m sometimes sad to not be a teenager anymore, is that I don’t get to grow up with books like this one.

III. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – Holly Jackson
Anscheinend habe ich es auch gewagt, neue Genre zu erkunden, denn normalerweise lese ich null Krimi/Thriller/Horror, aber dennoch hab ich dieses Buch gelesen und das auch richtig gerne! Auch hier wurde ich dadurch motiviert, dass Emma Myers die Hauptrolle in der Serienadaption spielt und ich sie ziemlich cool finde. Aber grade weil es hierbei um einen Cold-Case-Krimi geht, war es mir wichtig erst das Buch zu lesen, bevor ich die Serie gucke. Und ich bin sehr froh, dass ich es gelesen habe!
Pippa kann einfach nicht glauben, dass Andie Bell vor fünf Jahren wirklich von ihrem damaligen Freund Sal Singh umgebracht wurde. Denn ihre Leiche wurde nie gefunden und irgendwas an dem Fall scheint einfach nicht zu stimmen. Deshalb begibt sie sich auf Spurensuche und macht die Ermittlung zu ihrem Schulprojekt.
Ich hab richtig mitgefiebert und das Buch wirklich bis in die späten Abendstunden hinein nicht aus der Hand legen können. Niemals hätte ich gedacht, dass ich einen Krimi mal mit 5 Sternen bewerten würde, aber es ist passiert! Bald will ich die nächsten beiden Teil der Trilogie lesen!

Apparently last year was also the year that I dared to explore a new genre, because usually I stay awa from crime/thriller/horror books, because I am a wimp. I still picked up this book and then really loved reading it! Once again, my motivation was the adaptation of the book to the screen, this time Emma Myers starred as the main character and I think she’s pretty cool. But because it’s a cold-case-crime story, it was important to me to read the book first before watching the show. And I’m very glad I got to read it!
Pippa simply can’t believe that Andie Bell was killed by her boyfriend Sal Singh five years ago. Her body was never found and other things about the case just don’t seem to add up. So Pippa decides to take matters into her own hands and turns the investigation into her school project.
I was very hooked on the book and read it until way past my bedtime, because I simply couldn’t put it down. I never thought I would rate a crime novel 5 stars, but it happend! I want to read the two remaining books in the trilogy soon!

IV. Men Who Hate Women – Laura Bates
Um diesen Blogpost abzurunden darf natürlich ein Sachbuch nichts fehlen. Da Men Who Hate Women das einzige Sachbuch war, dem ich dieses Jahr eine 5/5 Sternen gegeben habe, fiel diese Entscheidung nicht schwer.
Das Buch ermöglicht Einblicke in die dunkelsten Ecken von Männer-Kulturen und Misogynie. Grade weil toxische Männlichkeit in feministischen Sphären immer wieder Thema ist und Männer dann regelmäßig auf die Barrikaden gehen, ist dieses Buch so wichtig und ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass besonders Männer es lesen sollten. Denn ja, es sind nicht alle Männer, aber eben (fast) immer Männer, die Frauen hassen und damit ins Extreme gehen. In meiner Bewertung des Buches hab ich geschrieben, dass ich nach dem Lesen nie wieder mit einem Mann sprechen will, aber gleichzeitig Hoffnung für eine bessere Zukunft für Männlichkeit und unsere Welt geschöpft habe. Daher: Leseempfehlung!

To finish off this blogpost, a little non-fiction had to be mentioned too. Since Men Who Hate Women was the only non-fiction book that I gave a 5/5 stars rating this year, the decision wasn’t particularly hard.
The book offers insights into the darkest corners of men cultures and misogyny. Especially because toxic masculinity is so often discussed in feminist spaces and drives so many men up the walls, this book is such an important read. I strongly believe that especially men should read it. Because yes, it’s not all men, but (almost) always men, who hate women to a dangerous extreme. In my reivew I wrote that reading the book made me never want to talk to a man ever again, but that it simultaneously left me hopeful for a better future for masculinity and the world. So: highly recommend!
