SPENCER: How do you hide the love in your eyes? Polyamory and Secrecy

BUSENFREUND*INNEN // BOSOM BUDDIES:
PRIDE MONTH SPECIAL PART I.

[Would it help if I told you that polyamorous relationships don’t necessarily mean that three or four or five people are all in the same relationship? The way I live it, my relationship with my husband is one relationship. It’s really very normal and expected: we hold hands and listen to audiobooks in the car and celebrate anniversaries. And then my husband has a partner and they have their own anniversaries and shared hobbies and we all know each other.]

I am 24 and working in theatre. It’s almost summer and the dressing room topics drift from vacation plans in faraway places to how many shows we have left until then. When I tell my colleague about my proposal plans she is giddy with excitement. We discuss rings, timing, sunrise or sunset? On one knee or less traditional? My colleague loves love. I feel golden with the joy of romance and camaraderie.
Until I slip up.
I mention my fiancé’s other partner and how I’m hoping she’ll make it to our wedding even though she’s an ocean away.
My colleague is confused, then cold. She doesn’t understand. I explain: we are polyamorous, we can fall in love with multiple people and everyone knows and it’s really lovely, actually, and she barks about how she could never do such a thing. She could never share her man. If I can, then that’s alright and she won’t judge, but she could simply never.

In welcher Unterhaltung?

[Queerness is a deviation from the norm and polyamory is a deviation from the norm and they are not the same and yet they are not unrelated.]

I am 11 and „dating” a boy in my class. We have never hung out one-on-one. He walks me to the end of the street after school and otherwise ignores my painstakingly T9-crafted texts. I claim to my diary that I am in love.
On Valentine’s Day, a group of girls comes running to me during recess, faces flush with preteen drama. Did you hear? Did you see? Your boyfriend just gave this other girl a heart shaped pendant as a Valentine’s gift. I pretend to care.

[I personally believe that not half as many people are truly monogamous as claim to be. Why would cheating be so common if people were truly wired to only love one person? You can’t tell me cheating is always about hurting your partner. I think it’s about people being attracted to people. Attraction isn’t wrong. Acting on it is a different game, if you have made a promise to a person not to.]

I am 18 and in my first long-term relationship. It is monogamous, of course. I don’t even know there are other options. I am spending the summer living in a tent in the woods, interning at a music festival. We live communally, cook for everyone and spend evenings by the bonfire. I have to leave the festival grounds and walk down the country road to even get a bar of service.
On one of my daily walks to the land of cell service, I receive a photo from my boyfriend. He’s laying in the grass, head on a friend’s lap, getting his head massaged. Joy sparks in me — good! He’s growing into beautiful platonic connections and I am too! I excitedly call and tell him about the movie night we had and how it was a big blanket fort and cuddle fest on one of the festival stages.
He is mad at me for days, demanding apologies for me crossing the line. I apologise but I’m not sure what for.
At the festival, I meet a new friend who is in an open relationship. I can practically feel my world expanding. I break up with my boyfriend half a year later and never try monogamy again, that concept that made sense to me in books and movies but never for me, in real life.

[I watch my husband walk the tightrope. Can he tell his colleagues about both of his loves? Has he already mentioned either of our names in passing? Can he remember which one, in which conversation, and then keep up the unconvincing half-truth that the other name he mentions all the time is simply a very close friend? How do you hide the love in your eyes?]

Here’s a vision:
I am 50. I like to go dancing. When I go out, I don’t even think about leaving my wedding ring at home because people don’t assume monogamy anymore. Mentioning that I am polyamorous is not perceived as a flirt but a harmless fact, something to know about the person you’re meeting, like their hobbies, their occupation or whether they have a dog. I also have a dog, of course, by 50 I am a full-time writer and so my dog comes with me to the coworking spaces and cafés I spend my time at. I have written books about polyamory, not textbooks but romantic comedies, light and funny and full of love, and at the readings I see my listeners hold hands, three and four at a time. In the last row, there’s my husband and my husband’s girlfriend and my husband’s girlfriend’s boyfriend and my wife (who I married in a free ceremony because despite my optimism, I fear multiple legal weddings are not in my lifetime). Some of us are friends and some of us are lovers and it may be hard to draw as a diagram but it’s easy to live. It comes naturally.
