JOEL: Between Pop, Longing and Self Discovery: the Soundtrack that led me to embrace my Queerness

BUSENFREUND*INNEN // BOSOM BUDDIES: PRIDE MONTH SPECIAL PART II.

I. Musik & Queerness // Music & Queerness

For the longest time, music and queerness have been historically and culturally linked. Music has always been more than just entertainment for the LGBTQ+ community. It’s been their voice in many ways, a safe space and an anchor of identity. Queer bands and artists are shaping the musical world across many genres in the past decades and at the same time, many queer people see themselves represented in certain songs, voices and atmospheres.

For me too, music has been undoubtedly linked with different phases in my life, and with my journey to embracing my queerness. Some songs express feelings that I was not able to articulate or name myself at the time. Others have stood for freedom, uncertainty, acceptance, or self discovery.
For the purpose of this blogpost, I have picked 16 songs and put them together on a kind of playlist, to write about what they have meant for me on my journey of self discovery.

II. Die 16 Lieder // The Playlist

Erstes kleines Outing: Fuck You von Lily Allen und Dancing On My Own von Robyn
In dieser Zeit haben mich besonders die Lieder Fuck You und Dancing On My Own begleitet.

Before I knew I was queer: Toxic and Everytime by Britney Spears
Before even knowing I was queer, those two songs were on repeat day in and day out. Looking back, this makes a lot of sense to me. Toxic especially is seen as a queer classic nowadays. And I get it, though the connection to me doesn’t so much lay in the lyrics, but the atmosphere of the song. It has a chaotic, kind of hectic energy that mirrors this diffuse feeling of being ”different”, without really being able to put your finger on why.

Funnily enough, I have many very vivid memories of performing this song in front of my bathroom mirror. Classic, using my hair brush as a microphone. Some of you will surely know what I’m talking about. Sometimes I catch myself remembering these kind of moments and thinking: I should have known way earlier.
In a stark contrast to this chaotic vibes is Everytime. This quiet pop ballade mainly carries the feeling of being lost and feeling insecure. Even though at a first glance this song tells the story of a broken, heterosexual relationship, in me it evokes the feeling of not yet knowing yourself fully, in a way.

First, small Outing: Fuck You by Lily Allen and Dancing On My Own by Robyn
Later on, in my teenage years, I slowly realised that I felt attracted to men, too. And somehow it felt really good. But only for me, by myself. To talk about this with other people, to come out, was something I could not picture myself doing. During that time, the songs Fuck You and Dancing On My Own were my constant companions.

Compared to the first two songs, I picked and listend to these two more intentionally. Fuck You to me, stood for feeling proud and this inner resistance to the norm. Even though I wasn’t openly expressing and living my sexuality, the slow realisation kicked in that there was nothing wrong with me. The song carries a confident, provokative energy that I found very freeing.

Dancing On My Own on the other hand, represents a different aspect of that time in my life: the feeling of loneliness and isolation. At the same time, this kind of loneliness felt different to the one triggered by Everytime. This difference can be heard in the combination of danceable disco pop music, combined with sad and emotional lyrics, and the melody.

Together, these two songs show the discrepancy and feeling of devision that go along with coming out to yourself: pride and fear, euphoria and insecurity, freedom and loneliness, all in one.

Besonders die Zeilen „There’s something inside you / It’s hard to explain / They’re talking about you, boy / But you’re still the same“ haben für mich rückblickend viel mit Selbstakzeptanz zu tun.

Running With The Wolves wirkt dagegen deutlich direkter und befreiender.

Acceptance and Freedom: Nightcall by Kavinsky and Running With The Wolves by Aurora
After an interim phase, I finally reached a deeper acceptance and with it came a feeling of freedom. This phase is represented by the songs Nightcall by Kavinsky and Running With The Wolves by Aurora. Even though Nightcall  has a more dark, lonely night time vibe, to me it’s still a positive song. Especially the line ”There’s something inside you / it’s hard to explain / They’re talking about you boy / but you’re still the same,” in retrospect have a lot to do with accepting myself. Obviously, queerness is not something ”hard to explain”, the song still summarises the situation when other people suddenly see something different in you and see you differently, even though you’re still the same person.

Running With The Wolves seems more direct and more free. It has a driving beat, Aurora’s intense voice and a wild energy that therefore represents an awakening and freedom. It’s the feeling of finally arriving somewhere within yourself that I associate with this song the most.

Freedom II: Younger Now by Miley Cyrus and Girls by Rita Ora ft. Cardi B, Bebe Rexha & Charli XCX
To me, Younger Now embodies this positive but unusual feeling of freedom, in a very good way. The song lyrics are about learning to accept your past and current self. That thought was very important to me back then, because accepting your current self has a lot to do with reinterpreting your past selves and learning to see them in a different light.

I really loved and enjoyed Girls. On my coming out journey, I first identified as bisexual and the themes of the song therefore resonated with me a lot. At the same time, I loved how it combined this party atmosphere with open bisexuality. Even though it’s written from the perspective of bisexual women, and plays with many clichés.
These days, I see the song more critically, since it’s also gotten a lot of backlash for the way it embodies clichés, makes bisexuality look cute and by doing that in part making the community look bad. Many queer people have voiced this criticism. Rita Ora and the collaborating artists have since apologised. Despite this, the song is still part of my personal journey.

Doubt: Falling Down by Lil Peep and XXXTENTACION and The Cure by Lady Gaga
Throughout the process of coming out, I slowly understood that I might not be bi after all, but leaned more towards being gay. Before I was able to fully accept the fact, there was a short period of doubt. This period, I associate with Falling Down, a different version of the song Sunlight On Your Skin by Lil Peep and iLoveMakonnen. Even though the lyrics had nothing to do with the situation I found myself in, the song still transports a feeling of a setback and disorientation.

Opposing this, The Cure by Lady Gaga offers a way more hopeful perspective. The song tells me that it’s totally fine to not have fully found myself yet. I especially love the combination of emotional warmth in the message of the song and the synthie pop melody.

Acceptance II: Silence by Mashmello ft. Khalid and Boys by Charli XCX
With accepting my gayness, came new music and listening to different songs. Silence stands for overcoming fear and insecurity for me. Especially the lyrics about ”breaking the silence” has a huge effect on me. With it comes the dynamic, driving force of the music, which turns the song into something emotional and freeing.

This phase is even more connected to the song Boys by Charli XCX though. This song has since become a queer pop classic. It’s just about crushing on men, simple as that. And this matter of fact depiction of very relatable feelings are, why this song is on this playlist and so important to me. The synth pop vibes, a very Charli XCX-like sound, are what I associate with the positivity that was also very needed in this phase of accepting myself, and beyond.

Comfort and Discovery: Strawberries & Cigarettes by Troye Sivan, Kiss The Boy by Keiynan Lonsdale, Cherry by FLETCHER feat. Hayley Kiyoko, Spice by Leo Kalyan
I don’t necessarily associate these songs with a specific phase or conflicts in my life, but more with the conscious discovery of queer music/artists and the feeling to finally feel comfortable in/with your identity. Especially artists like Troye Sivan, Hayley Kiyoko or Keiynan Lonsdale represent the importance and implicitness of queer perspectives in pop music.
There music and art isn’t just about self doubt and finding yourself, but about queer joy, visibility and representation.

III. Fazit // Conclusion

Pride is not just happening at demonstrations, Christopher Street Days or political events. Pride can be very quiet, personal and everyday-ish. Music therefore is a very important aspect of many queer person’s livies, because it can express feelings that are often hard to explain in words. Songs can carry you through and accompany you on your journey through self doubt, finding yourself, coming outs, doubts and acceptance.

Because of this, I would argue that music is not just a way to pass the time for many queer LGBTQ+ people. It carries memories, is a safe space to return to, an anchor to your identity. Some songs may remind you of difficult periods, but others will trigger feelings of freedom and pride. And sometimes a certain chorous can be enough to make you feel understood.

In retrospect, I associate these songs not only with very specific points in my life, but also with the process of getting to know myself better. Therefore, pride doesn’t always mean to be loud, political or visible.
