Im vergangen Jahr habe ich viel neue Musiker*innen entdeckt, Albumkonzepte gefeiert und Livestreamkonzerte „besucht“. Deswegen sind meine Favoriten und Neuentdeckungen dieses Jahr ein bunter Mix aus Künster*innen, spezifischen Alben oder auch nur einzelnen Songs. Ich hoffe, ihr seid bereit!
Ich muss sagen, dass 2020 bei mir sehr von Schwarzen Musiker*innen dominiert wurde und um ehrlich zu sein – ist nice.

This past year I discovered a lot of great new artists, fell in love with the concepts behind whole albums and “visited“ streaming concerts. That’s why my favourites and discoveries of the year are a bit all over the place. I hope you are ready for some dope artists, specific albums or just a selection of songs!

Als die Black Lives Matter Bewegung im Sommer so dominierend in den Medien war, hat mein Youtube-Algorithmus mich auf Tobe Nwigwe gebracht. Ich muss sagen, das war das beste was mir musikalisch 2020 passieren konnte. Abartig gute Sounds, großartige Texte und ästhetische und künstlerische Videos, die ich stundenlang anschauen könnte.
Seit des ersten Lockdowns bringt Tobe zusammen mit seiner Frau “Fat“ und seiner Producerin Nell jeden Sonntag ein neues Brett mit Video und wenn es etwas gibt, was mich durch zwanzig-zwanzig gebracht hat, dann das.
Das Album THE PANDEMIC PROJECT umfasst alle Songs, die im ersten Lockdown in Texas entstanden sind und ich hab es seit dem rauf und runter gehört. Ein zweites Quarantäne Album das Cincoriginals heißt, ist auch schon released. Ich kann bei Tobes Musik weinen, schmunzeln und einfach nur in Begeisterung ausbrechen. Wer nicht mal reinhört, der*die verpasst was!
Ich hab mir außerdem ein Ticket für den THE PANDEMIC EXPERIENCE Livestream gekauft und es war absolute großartig und das erste virtuelle Konzert das ich jemals erlebt habe.

When Black Lives Matter was all over the news last summer, my Youtube algorithm sent me in the direction of Tobe Nwigwe. I have to say, that is the best thing that happened to me in the music department that year. Smashing sounds, amazing lyrics and aesthetically and artistically pleasing videos that I could simply watch for ever.
Since the first lockdown started, Tobe, his wife “Fat“ and his producer Nell have been releasing one song (plus video!) every Sunday and if there is one thing that helped me get through twenty-twenty, it was this.

II. GIVEON
Bei diesem Favoriten geht es um eine spezifische Platte von Giveon, die mich im Herbst und Winter sehr intensiv begleitet hat. Seine When It’s All Said And Done EP, die im Oktober 2020 rauskam.
Erst habe ich mich in das Cover verliebt, dann in die Stimme des Mannes, die Texte, die Musik und das ganze Konzept dahinter… einfach alles.
In den vier Liedern habe ich mich sehr oft wiedergefunden und konnte mich sehr damit identifizieren. Die Songs sind frech, traurig, poetisch, wunderschön und romantisch. Ich hab die EP wochenlang in Dauerschleife gehört. Das beste daran war, in der Öffentlichkeit Still Your Best zu hören und unter meiner Maske wegen der sexuell angehauchten Lyrics grinsen zu müssen ohne dass mich jemand dabei erwischen konnte.
Habe alles an When It’s All Said And Done einfach absolut geliebt und hoffe, dass Giveon in der Zukunft noch sehr viel mehr zu sagen/singen hat.

With Giveon it was one specific release that stuck with me throughout autumn and winter. And that is his When It’s All Said And Done EP that was released in October 2020.
I first fell in love with the EP cover, then with the man’s voice, the lyrics, the music and the whole concept… just all of it.
There is so much in those four songs that I can relate to and feel on a deep emotional level. The songs are cheeky, sad, poetic, beautiful and romantic. I listend to it on repeat for weeks. Best thing was being out in public, listening to Still Your Best and smiling underneath my mask about the sexual suggestiveness of the lyrics without anyone noticing.
Absolutely loved everything about When It’s All Said And Done and hope that Giveon still has a lot left to say/sing in the future!

Teamarrr war ebenfalls eine meiner Youtubeentdeckungen und die Songs die ich dann nach und nach gefunden habe, haben mich definitiv durch den ersten Lockdown im Frühjahr gebracht. Besonders One Job, Kinda Love und Chasing Amy haben es mir angetan. Ihr Sound verbreitet gute Laune, sie nimmt kein Blatt vor den Mund und ihre Songs und Videos haben immer eine Story zu erzählen. Eine starke Frau, die ihre Sexualität für sich beansprucht und daraus auch noch großartige Musik macht mit der man mitfühlen und -tanzen kann? Ja, bitte!

Slow Up lässt mich losheulen und jedes Mal die Luft anhalten, weil der Text so perfekt ist und mich so tief berührt.
Ich verehre Jacob Banks Stimmfarbe und sein poetisches Talent. Ein wahrer Künstler. Hier ein Beweis:

I really have a thing for artists, whose songs could almost work as poems, if that makes any sense. Jacob Banks is one of them and the few songs by him that I know and love are so breathtakingly beautiful.
