Es ist, wie zu Beginn jedes Jahres, wieder an der Zeit für meine Faves & Discoveries des vergangenen Jahres. In drei Blogposts werde ich Euch von meinen liebsten Büchern, Serien und Filmen, sowie Musik aus dem Jahr 2022 erzählen, denn obwohl das Jahr in vielerlei Hinsicht ziemlich doof war, hat mich die Popkultur nicht enttäuscht und mir den ein oder anderen schlechten Tag versüßt
As usual, it’s that time of the year again where I write about my Faves & Discoveries of the past year. In three blogposts I want to tell you about my favourite books, series and movies, and music of 2022, because even though the past year sucked in many ways, pop culture didn’t disappoint and saved the day for me several times.
Bücher // Books
2022 war mein bisher bestes Lesejahr. Ich habe mein reguläres Leseziel von 52 bei weitem überschritten und 75 Bücher gelesen. Ich habe Genre für mich neuentdeckt, viel Unterhaltungsliteratur gelesen, aber auch einige ernstzunehmende Sachliteratur und Lyrik. Im Folgenden will ich Euch meine vier Lieblingsbücher die ich 2022 gelesen habe, vorstellen.
2022 has been my best reading year yet. I reached and exceeded my regular reading goal of 52 books by a lot and in the end managed to read 75 books. I discovered new genres, read a lot of light literature, but also some serious non-fiction and poetry. In the following I want to talk about four of my favourite books I read in 2022.
I. FREISCHWIMMEN – Caleb Azumah Nelson
Freischwimmen war tatsächlich das zweite Buch was ich 2022 gelesen habe und es hat mich übers ganze Jahr nicht losgelassen. Es geht um die Liebesgeschichte zweier Schwarzer Menschen, die sich durch Zufall begegnen und eine direkte Verbindung zueinander spüren. Abgesehen von den in die Geschichte mit eingesponnenen Referenzen zu Schwarzer Kultur und Identität, hat mich vor allem Caleb Azumah Nelsons poetische Sprache und die Wahl der Erzählweise fasziniert. Es ist das erste Buch das ich gelesen habe, das in 2. Person Singular geschrieben ist, sodass ich wirklich das Gefühl hatte der*die Protagonist*in zu werden und nochmal ganz anders, tiefer in die Gefühlswelten und die Handlung eintauchen konnte. Vielleicht hat es mich deswegen so nachhaltig beschäftigt. Kann es nur empfehlen!
Open Water was only the second book I read in 2022 and I couldn’t stop thinking about it throughout the year. It’s a love story between two Black people that meet by chance and feel an instant connection with each other. Apart from the Black pop culture references and Black identity that are weaved into the story, Caleb Azumah Nelson’s poetic language and the choice of narrative style fascinated me. It’s the first book I’ve ever read that was written in second person singular, which made you feel like you were becoming the protagonist and lead me to dive deeper into the emotions and the story. Maybe that’s why it left a lasting impression. Highly recommend!
II. RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE – Casey McQuiston
Mit Red, White & Royal Blue habe ich nicht nur meine Liebe zu Casey McQuiston entdeckt, sondern auch das Romcom-Genre. Ich bin ja bekanntlich ein großer von von romantischen Komödien in Filmform und habe mit Sicherheit auch das ein oder andere Romcombuch gelesen, aber dieses Jahr habe ich mich das erste Mal wirklich bewusst dazu entschieden mehr aus diesem Genre zu lesen; ein Grund dafür war dieses Buch.
Casey McQuiston entwirft eine Alternativrealität in der nicht Trump, sondern eine Frau of Colour die Präsidentschaftswahlen in den USA 2016 gewonnen hat. Es geht um ihren Sohn Alex, der selbst große politische Ambitionen hat und sich perfekt in seine Rolle als First Son der USA einfindet. Es gibt nur ein Problem: Alex und der Prinz of Wales in England können sich nicht leiden und die Klatschpresse hat davon Wind bekommen. Die beiden sind also gezwungen so zu tun als wären sie beste Freunde und daraus entwickelt sich dann schnell mehr – Alex wird bewusst, dass er queer ist und die beiden Rivalen werden zu Liebhabern…
Ich konnte das Buch wirklich nicht aus der Hand legen. Es war so witzig geschrieben und hat mich total in seinen Bann gezogen. Würde es jederzeit wieder Lesen und werde das bestimmt dieses Jahr tun, denn die Verfilmung ist abgedreht und kommt sicher bald in die Kinos. Habe gemischte Gefühle wenn es um den Film geht, aber beim Buch kann ich nur sagen: es war ein großer Lesespaß!

I mean, it’s common knowledge that I love romantic comedies in the form of films and I’ve for sure read romcom books before, but this year was the first time I consciously chose to read this genre; one of the reasons to do so was reading this book.

The book is about her son Alex, who has political ambitions himself and takes his role as the First Son of the USA very seriously. But there is one problem: Alex and the Prince of Wales across the pond really don’t like each other and the tabloids feast on it. The two of them are forced to act as if they are best of friends to save face and this quickly turns into more – Alex realises that he is queer and the two rivals turn into lovers…
I simply couldn’t put this book down. It was so funny and I was completely hooked. Would absolutely read it again any time und will probably do so soon, because there is a movie adaptation on the way. I have mixed feelings about this film, but when it comes to be book, I can definitely say: it’s the greatest fun to read!

III. ON EARTH WE’RE BRIEFLY GORGEOUS – Ocean Vuong
Ich habe 2021 das erste Mal Ocean Vuongs Gedichte gelesen. 2022 habe ich es dann endlich geschafft seinen ersten Roman zu lesen – und das gleich zweimal! Meiner Meinung nach und vor allem nachdem ich Auf Erden Sind Wir Kurz Grandios gelesen habe, ist Ocean Vuong eine der größten, wichtigsten, (queeren), literarischen Stimmen unserer Zeit. In diesem semi-biographischen Buch schreibt ein Sohn in Briefform an seine vietnamesische Mutter, die nicht lesen und schreiben kann und erzählt seine Lebensgeschichte – die Flucht der Familie nach dem Vietnamkrieg in die USA, das generationsübergreifende Kriegstrauma, die Erfahrungen als Person of Colour in Amerika aufzuwachsen, die erste Liebe zu einem Jungen…
Es ist deutlich zu spüren, dass Ocean Vuong Lyriker ist; er hat eine Art die Welt zu beschreiben, die einzigartig und atemberaubend ist. Das Buch bricht mir das Herz, aber auf die beste Art und Weise die mensch sich vorstellen kann.

I read Ocean Vuong’s poetry for the first time in 2021. Last year I finally managed to also get my hands on his first novel – and read it twice! In my opinion, especially after reading On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, Ocean Vuong is one of the greatest, most important, (queer), literary voices of your time. In this semi-biographical book, a son writes letters to his Vietnamese mother, who can’t read or write, and tells her his life story – the family’s migration from post-war Vietnam to the US, the intergenerational war trauma, the experience of growing up in the USA as a person of Colour, him falling in love with a boy for the first time…
It’s very obvious that Ocean Vuong is a poet and knows his way with words; he has a way of describing the world that is unique and breathtaking. The book broke my heart, but in all the best ways imaginable.

IV. YOU MADE A FOOL OF DEATH WITH YOUR BEAUTY – Akwaeke Emezi
Akwaeke Emezi hat es in vergangenen Jahren schon öfter auf meine Favoritenliste geschafft und ist seit mehreren Jahren eine*r meine*r Lieblingsautor*innen. Auch You Made A Fool of Death With Your Beauty hat mich wieder sehr begeistert. Es wird als Emezis erste Romcom gehandelt, auch wenn ich es eher als emotionale, bisexuelle Angst beschreiben würde.
Es geht um Künstlerin Feyi, die versucht den Verlust ihres Ehemanns zu überleben und zufällig auf Nasir trifft, einen Sohn reicher Eltern mit Connections in der Kunstszene, der sie einlädt den Sommer mit ihm und seiner Familie in deren Villa im Dschungel zu verbringen und Teil einer Ausstellung zu sein. Feyi hat Angst, sich dadurch zu sehr an Nasir zu binden, will sich aber auch die Chance ihrer Karriere nicht entgehen lassen. Doch sie hat nicht mit Nasirs Vater gerechnet…
Wie immer hat mich Emezi mit dieser Story total begeistert und ich konnte es kaum aus der Hand legen. Es ist eine emotionale Achterbahn, die wunderschöne, berauschende Bilder entstehen lässt und Lust auf einen Urlaub in einer gläsernen Villa mitten im Wald macht – die perfekte Lektüre um bei heißen Temperaturen am Pool zu liegen!

Akwaeke Emezi has made it onto this list a few times in the past years and has been one of my favourite authors for several years now. Like all of their books You Made A Food Of Death With Your Beauty completely blew me away. It’s sold as Emezi’s first romcom, but I would probably say it’s more emotional, bisexual Angst.
The story follows artist Feyi, who tries to survive after her husbands untimely death, and one day she meets Nasir. He’s the son of rich parents with connections in the art industry and invites her to spend the summer with him and his family in their villa in the jungle, and to be part of a big exhibition. Feyi worries that she will owe him and doesn’t want to commit to him, but she also doesn’t want to miss the biggest career opportunity of her life. She also didn’t think that Nasir’s father would get in the way…
As per usual with Emezi, I absolutely adored this story and it was hard to put it down. It was a real emotional roller coaster that created beautiful, thrilling images and scenarios that make you want to book a vacation at a luxury, glass villa in the middle fo the woods – the perfect read when it’s hot outside and you’re spending the day at the pool.
