Ein neues Jahr hat begonnen und ihr wisst wahrscheinlich schon, was das bedeutet: es ist Zeit für meinen popkulturellen Rückblick und die Highlights aus meinen liebsten Büchern, Serien oder Filmen und der Musik in 2025. Wie jedes Jahr starten wir erstmal mit den literarischen Favoriten, von denen es dieses Jahr so viele wie noch nie gab!
A new year is already in full swing and you probably already what this means on this blog: it’s time for my annual look back on the past year and gush over my pop cultural highlights of 2025 in the categories books, films and TV, and music. As always we will start of with my literary favourites, which I had an abundance of this year!
2025 hatte ich einfach sehr viel Freude an Büchern, obwohl ich zeitweise wenig Lesemotivation hatte. Gleichzeitig gab es so viele 5-Sterne-Bewertungen auf meinem StoryGraph, wie noch nie zuvor. Für diesen Blogpost habe ich von den 14 besten Büchern von 2025 nur drei ausgewählt, werde die anderen am Ende aber auch nochmals auflisten, oder im Laufe des Blogposts erwähnen. Fangen wir an!
In 2025 I had a lot of fun with books, even though I had my fair share of reading slumps, too. At the same time, I have never given out as many 5 star ratings on my StoryGraph as I did last year. For the purpose of this blogpost I have picked three out of my 14 best books of 2025, but will list the others at the end of this post, or mention them throughout. Let’s begin!
I. MARGO’S GOT MONEY TROUBLES – RUFI THORPE
Dieses Buch ist mir noch sehr gut in Erinnerung, da ich es erst im Dezember gelesen habe. Zunächst war ich etwas irritiert, da es zu Beginn die Leser*innen direkt anspricht und im Verlauf des Romans die Erzählform zwischen erster und dritter Person Singular hin und her wechselt. Sobald ich mich daran gewöhnt hatte, fand ich es aber richtig toll und auch durch den Wechsel einzigartig und interessant zu lesen.
Es geht um die junge Studentin Margo, die nach einer Affäre mit ihrem Professor schwanger wird und sich entschließt, das Kind zu behalten. Sie wohnt in einer unkonventionellen WG mit ihrer Cosplay-begeisterten Mitbewohnerin Susie und ihrem Ex-Wrestlingpro Vater Jinx. Ohne College-Abschluss und Job ist es für Margo schwierig, die seltsame Kleinfamilie zu finanzieren. Kurzerhand beschließt sie dann, einen OnlyFans-Account zu erstellen, bei dem sie Unterstützung von Susie und Jinx erhält und der ziemlich schnell sehr erfolgreich läuft.
Es ist einfach eine großartige, lustige, dramatische und etwas abgefuckte Story mit spannenden, verschrobenen Charakteren, die ich sehr gerne gelesen habe. Es geht um Mutterschaft, Sexarbeit, Familientrauma und die Zweiseitigkeit von Interneterfolg und ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass es für großartige Diskussionen in einem Buchclub sorgen könnte.
Im April 2026 soll auch eine Apple TV Serienadaption des Buches veröffentlicht werden – perfektes Timing also, um diese Buchempfehlung vor dem Frühjahr noch in die Hand zu nehmen und zu lesen!

This book is rather fresh on my mind, since I only read it past December. At first I was a bit irritated, because it speaks to the reader directly at the beginning and throughout the story switches between first and thrid person narration, which took me a while to get behind. Once I got used to it though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrational switches made this book a very unique and interesting reading experience for me.

II. JUST FOR THE SUMMER – ABBY JIMENEZ
Das Romance-Genre hat mich seit ein paar Jahren sehr im Griff und neben Lizzy Blake’s Best Mistake von Mazey Eddings, The Charm Offensive von Alison Chochrun, Save the Date von Allison Raskin, The Pairing von Casey McQuiston und Funny Story von Emily Henry, war Just For the Summer von Abby Jimenez wahrscheinlich meine Lieblings-Romcom in 2025.
Gelesen habe ich das Buch, weil Raya, eine meiner Lieblingsyoutuber*innen es empfohlen hat. Und was soll ich sagen? Es hat sich sehr gelohnt!
Es geht um Justin und Emma, die beide das Problem haben, dass jede Person die sie bisher gedatet haben, nach der Trennung die Liebe ihres Lebens trifft, während Emma und Justin dazu verdammt schienen, ewig Single zu bleiben. Nachdem Justin mit dieser These auf reddit viral geht und Emma seinen Post entdeckt, schreibt sie ihn an und die beiden beschließen, sich zu helfen: vielleicht wird der Fluch verpuffen, wenn sie sich gegenseitig daten und dann trennen. Es soll eigentlich nur eine Mittel-zum-Zweck-Romanze für den Sommer sein, aber schnell sind die beiden mit vielen Problemen konfrontiert, nähren sich an und verlieben sich in einander.
Ich habe wirklich laut gelacht und geweint beim Lesen und fand den Plot auch sehr unterhaltsam. Alles in allem einfach eine sehr gute Romcom!

III. SON OF THE MORNING – AKWAEKE EMEZI
Seit 2018 vergeht glaube ich kein Jahr, in dem ich nicht mindestens ein Buch von Akwaeke Emezi lese und komplett abfeiere. Dieses Jahr habe ich neben Son of the Morning auch Little Rot und Somadina gelesen und absolut geliebt.
Son of the Morning ist das neuste Buch meine*r Lieblingsautor*in, veröffentlich im November 2025, und für mich ein neues Subgenre, um das ich normalerweise einen großen Bogen mache: Romantasy. Aber weil es eben Akwaeke Emezi ist, wollte ich dem Buch auf jeden Fall eine Chance geben. Ich hatte dabei nicht erwartet, dass es vielleicht eines der für mich besten Bücher von Emezi werden könnte. Man lernt nie aus.
Es geht um Galilee, die aus einer besonderen, reinen Frauenfamilie kommt und beschließt, endlich außerhalb der ihr bekannten, mysteriösen Waldgegend und fernab von ihrer magisch seltsamen Familie, ein normales Leben zu führen. Doch dann begegnet sie den Boss der Security des Vaters ihrer Freundin. Und Lucifer Helel ist nicht nur wunderschön, sondern entpuppt sich tatsächlich als der gefallene Engel aus der Bibel. Auch Lucifer ist besessen von Galilee, denn irgendwas ist an ihr ebenfalls nicht von dieser Welt. Und dann ist da auch noch einer von Lucifers Prinzen, Leviathan, der in Galli eine Gefahr für den fragilen Frieden zwischen Himmel und Hölle sieht, aber sich ebenfalls zu ihr hingezogen fühlt.
Was soll ich sagen? Niemals hätte ich gedacht, dass ich mich für biblische Fantasy mit sehr viel Spice begeistern könnte, aber dann ist es eben doch passiert. Es ist einfach so selten, dass ich eine wirkliche Ménafe à trois erlebe, denn oftmals sind ja nur zwei Personen an der dritten Person interessiert und nicht alle involvierten Parteien an den jeweils beiden anderen. Allein das ist ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal für Son of the Morning. Und Emezi ist einfach phänomenal darin, düstere, brutale Geschichten zu erzählen, bei denen die Funken fliegen.

I think that ever since discovering them in 2018, not a year has gone by where I didn’t read a book by Akwaeke Emezi and absolutely loved it. Apart from Son of the Morning, I also read Little Rot and Somandina und truly adored those books as well.

It tells the story of Galilee, who grows up in a very special, matriarchal family, but decides to move away from the magic-mythical woods of her home and try and lead a normal life in the city, away from her family. But then she encounters her friend’s father’s head of security. And Lucifer Helel is tempting in more than one way, since he is not only beautiful, but also the literal fallen angle from the bible. And Lucifer is also quickly obsessed with Gali, because it turns out, there is something dangerous and otherworldly about her, too. And then there is one of Lucifer’s princes, Leviathan, who also sees the danger Galilee poses to the fragile truce between heaven and hell, but at the same time can’t seem to keep away from her either.
What can I say. I never thought I would fall completely in love with a bible adjacent fantasy smut book, but it did happen. It’s such a rare thing to see an actual love triangle, where everyone is in love with every person involved, and not just a love corner where two people are interested in the same person. That alone is a unique selling point for Son of the Morning. Plus, Emezi is simply phenomenal when it comes to writing dark, brutal stories that also make sparks fly.

Hi Kaja – Happy Birthday! I hope you have/had a lovely day! (I remember your birthday as it’s the same as James Joyce’s, who was very superstitious). Anyway, I wanted to recommend a book for you: Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis. It’s very funny and very rude book about a serious subject – working in Iraq with Isis ‚brides‘. I enjoyed it hugely – as an audiobook, which I can recommend (and could send you a copy) – as it brings the book to life in all sorts of ways and gives a voice to the characters, but I’m sure a printed book works just as well. And she followed me on Instagram, which is a high point in my limited social media activity! So, keep up the good work – I enjoy receiving your newsletters, and your blog, but suspect I’m not really the target audience… best wishes, and to all the family. Andrew x
