LU: NARCISSISM IN TIMES OF CORONA

BUSENFREUND*INNEN // BOSOM BUDDIES:
PRIDE MONTH SPECIAL PART II.

How narcissistic are we becoming in this pandemic?

For over year now nothing as happened. Nothing at all, right?
It’s alway the same, lockdown number 1, then 2, then number 3. Wearing masks, keeping your distance, keeping all the hygienic regulations in mind. Meeting people only 6ft apart, hiding your expressions behind medical FFP-2 masks. The focus shifts to “the window to ones soul“. It’s all becoming one grey blur, with no end in sight. Not the eyes of course, but Corona.

Saying goodbye to this time will be very easy for me.
And so much has happened in the past year, when you think about it. Not just in our personal lives, but all over the world.
But everything changes so fast that you don’t even realise or see it anymore.

So, what has happened in the LGBTQIA+ community this past year? The “Trans Black Lives Matter Movement“ is the first thing that comes to my mind. Last year has been the worst year on record when it comes to violence against trans* people. More than 300 trans* and gender non-confirming people have been murdered because of their sexuality worldwide.

It almost feels as if the world has stopped moving forward when it comes to acceptance. But can’t this moment of stillness also be an opportunity for change? We are forced to confront us with ourselves ever since the pandemic started. Isolation is poison for humans and our mental health.

There is not a lot left for us – social media, perhaps.
But between all those content creators and influencers, whose posts don’t have real messages or meaning most of the time, social media may also present an opportunity.
Photos and videos that show violence and/or criminal activities towards minority groups can be shown and shared with the whole world. It confronts us with the cold and ugly truth that these things still happen and exist in this world, even in 2021.
Irgendwie dann doch sehr weit weg.

But aren’t humans capable of getting used to everything like the creatures of habit that we are? Even when it comes to witnessing the widely shared violence against minorities?
Somehow that’s all so far removed from us. And a similar situation has happened before, a few weeks ago, in a different country. I feel like I’ve become numb regarding everything that is currently happening on this planet.
The most important thing is that I feel okay and comfortable, right?
But how okay and comfortable can I really be, if I have to block out so much of what is happening around me?
In the end I still want to make this world a better place with everything I do. Isn’t that a form of narcissism, too? To try to shape the world after my vision of a life of acceptance and compassion for everyone and everything?

To come back to the question posted at the beginning, how narcissistic we are becoming in this pandemic –  there is probably no one right answer. But I hope that I’ve got you thinking while reading this post so that you can come to your own individual conclusion.
