VULVA TALK

getting down to it

For some reason that I don’t really get, there is a social stigma about our private parts. You can tell, by the fact how many words we use just to NOT use the words „penis“ or „vulva“.
My question is just why that is?
I mean, our sex organs (penis! vulva! there you go, I said it again!) are not only the source of all life, but also a source of lust and pleasure.
For me it’s a big problem that there is such a taboo about the topic. The reason is, that I’m discovering, that I’m not the only person who had to suffer because no one ever talks about penises and vulvas. There are no open discussions, you don’t ask questions, without it becoming an ironic conversation or you being shamed for it.
But people, let’s just talk about our „down there“s openly and in a serious manner – what we like, what we dislike, what we struggle with…
Because this is the only way that we might find out, that we are not alone with our doubts. That we have different bodies, and therefore different sexual organs, and that there is NO PROBLEM in that. There is nothing „wrong“ or „ugly“ about your vulva/penis; just because it looks different than the ones you have seen, doesn’t mean that you should feel less comfortable in your own skin!
So I thought, I would just start the dialogue and talk about my own experiences, problems and doubts when it comes to my vulva. Maybe we can break the taboo with this discourse, be more caring about our own bodies, exchange thoughts and make a step towards self-confidence and self-acceptance!

When I look at my vulva, I think I like her most days. But that definitely wasn’t always the case! For hell of a long time, I thought she was ugly. I also thought, that something must be wrong with me/her. Because she just looked so different to the other vulvas I saw in locker rooms or in porn.
I cannot stress this enough: my vulva was the source of my BIGGEST self-doubts, ever!
There were/are three main reason for me doubting her, which I’d like to list and explain in the following.

FAKTOR I. // REASON ONE

My labia. Oh boy, those were my biggest problems of them all. You see, it’s not only the fact that both my inner labia are hanging out a little, it’s also that one of them is much longer than the other one and really big. I didn’t have any vulvas around me that looked anything like mine. I thought she was ugly. And because I could not compare her to another, similar one, I thought she was abnormal and somehow wrong.
Furthermore some people mistook that one, longer labia for the foreskin of my clitoris, which obviously had a huge effect on my sex life and me having some not so positive experiences in the matter.
I’ll be honest, this went so far, that I was close to getting a surgery to make my labia smaller and just as neat and tugged in as the others I’d seen. That’s how much it bothered me. But luckily it never came to that surgery. Thanks to my own positive mind-set when it comes to my body, that I had to force upon myself in the beginning, and heartfelt words of sexual partners and my family (we are very open about bodies and sexual stuff and talk about all this). Through that I learned to accept my labia the way they are. And I swear, it made many things much easier and more enjoyable.

FAKTOR II. // REASON TWO

Body hair. A topic of its own, but in this case we’ll just focus on pubic hair. First let me say though, that body hair is something everyone needs to wrap their heads around for themselves. You just go and find out what you feel most comfortable with: letting it grow, trimming it, or shaving it off completely.
I also went through that process and it took a lot of time and experimenting. For a while I partly shaved and always left a little triangle to crown my vulva with. It never made me feel comfortable though. Often enough I kinda felt scruffy and the on-going trimming cost a lot of time and nerves.
At the moment I am close to finishing permanent hair-removal AKA laser treatment. Yes, maybe society and the „norms“ when it comes to being hairless and having baby-skin, especially as a woman, got into my head. But having no hair just makes me feel cleaner and more comfortable with myself.

FAKTOR III. // REASON III.

A big factor that kept my vulva confidence down, was and sometimes still is, my period. I guess I’m not the only person of all menstruating human beings on this planet, who feels gross while on their period. It’s definitely something I have been struggling with forever. I simply used to (and sometimes still do) feel really dirty during my menstruation, because I find blood a little disgusting. Of course I’ve been bleeding for quite a while now and I somehow, kinda came to terms with the fact, that my body goes through this monthly process. I must say, I am not particularly happy about the fact that I bleed outta my vulva on a regular basis, but I guess I grew up a little and found out, that there is nothing (or very little) that I can do about it. I just feel more comfortable about my period, which has to do with the fact that I talk about it openly.

What I’m trying to say is: it doesn’t mater what gender you are, or what you identify as, every body is different and therefore it develops different characteristics. Vulvas and penises (I swear, if I had one, I’d totally write a blog post like this about him, too), are maybe a little weird parts of our bodies. But they are also very important parts.
It’s so not about size, form, the hair, the fact that you are circumcised or not, colour, scars, birthmarks or what ever there might be that you feel insecure about. It’s simply all about feeling good with whatever, no matter what.
And maybe a simple question and discussion with others will help you get to that feeling.
