I feel like most of you know at this point that I’ve become a huge romance novel fan in the past year or so. Generally I’d say I’ve always been obsessed with romance in movies and read the odd romantic book here and there, but the romcom genre has only been on my radar really since February 2022. Since then it has become one of my favourite genres to read, simply because it offers the perfect escapism, you always know that despite the drama there will be a happy end, and since I am a huge responsive desire person, reading spicy books is one of the few things that will turn me on while I’m not in a relationship.
Speaking of relationships. I think romance books are not only one of the most selling genres, but are wildly successful with younger audiences now that they have made it to TikTok and them being HUGE in the BookTok community. So much so, that some of the BookTok-challenges that can be found on the video platform have women asking their partners to do certain things, reenact tropes or scenes from their favourite romcoms, and all of them go absolutely crazy for it.
The biggest hype is probably the „he leaned against the doorframe“-challenge. It’s funny to watch because the men are mostly irritated at first, not understanding why them leaning against the doorframe is so sexy to their girlfriends, but once they do it, the women get super flustered and everyone is enjoying themselves. Seeing all of those videos got me thinking and I do believe that we can learn a lot about the small things that make relationships from romance novels. Obviously most romcoms are very hetero normative and the genre itself isn’t seen as serious literature (which it often isn’t, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it!), so I’d say this appeal mainly goes out to cis, heterosexual dudes: get over your misogynist fear of books labeled as „womens literature“ and READ A ROMCOM!
I do feel like most romcoms can be read as almost universal manuals as to what many women are looking for in a partner and how to cater to those wants/needs. I know it’s very overgeneralising to say this and you should never assume that just because your partner enjoys a certain book that it’s what they want to experience in real life. But at the very least, spicy romance novels can give you ideas and start conversations with your partner to talk about those fictional situations and dynamics and which aspects from them you might want to include/adopt in your own life. These books can also teach you some skills when it comes to intimacy, sex, respect and cherishing your partner and honestly that’s not too much to ask for in a relationship. Plus reading in general is sexy, so you’ll have that going for you as well.
The BookTok-challenges show that the smallest actions, like shifting your weight and holing on to a doorframe, or holding your girlfriend’s head up to look into her eyes, could go a long way, at the very least you’ll have a laugh together. The bar is really that low at this point, dudes. //K.

I especially love the ending: „Die Erwartungen sind inzwischen wirklich super niedrig, Jungs.“
